A plan to renovate the Taco Bell at the corner of Tucker Road and West Valley Boulevard was approved by the Tehachapi Planning Commission on September 13. The commission also approved designs for 55 new homes planned for the Alta Estates subdivision.

Tehachapi’s only Taco Bell was built in 1992 with what has been called a “Miami Vice vibe,” featuring a tiled roof, arched entrances, stucco exterior walls, and interior decor in pink, peach, and teal.

Many design features are inconsistent with the restaurant’s current branding. The remodeling will correct this, modifying the facade to include stones as well as gray paint with purple accents.

The Taco Bell outlet is owned by Century Fast Foods, LLC, of Century City. The company also agreed to refresh the landscaping around the restaurant.

According to the municipal staff report, the signage will be reviewed as part of a separate application.

Corona-based K Hovnanian plans to build on 55 lots he purchases in the Alta Estates subdivision on the southern outskirts of town, north of Highline Road and west of Curry Street.

The subdivision of 384 lots was approved in 2003. The houses in parts of the first three of the five phases were built between 2004 and 2007. The developer was among the victims of the economic crash of 2007-2008 and went bankrupt.

According to a report from the city, the remaining land was purchased by TLK Group, which completed construction of houses in the first three phases.

K Hovnanian’s proposal to the Tehachapi Planning Commission on September 13 was for an architectural overhaul of 12 plans to build on 55 lots that he purchases from TLK Group, LLC, of Laguna Niguel. The architectural styles would be hacienda, farmhouse and Spanish, with sizes ranging from 1,927 to 2,401 square feet.

The commission approved the drawings. A representative of K Hovnanian at the meeting said the company is completing a feasibility study and it is too early to know whether it will undertake further construction in the subdivision.

The approved designs are the same ones K Hovnanian uses at a gated community, Westview Estates, Lancaster. This subdivision was also relaunched after construction stopped during the 2007-2008 recession.

The price of the new homes on offer has not yet been determined.
