Designer Norma Kamali has been synonymous with comfortable yet incredibly chic clothing (her “sleeping bag coat” and sweatshirts are forever iconic) for decades, and her latest company is bringing that same concept to your home decor. June 15 marks the launch of the Norma Kamali home collection, NORMALIFE HOME, and although the line only starts with one product, it’s something quite versatile for every type of space: a pillow. oversized.
This is not the first example of Kamali’s expansion beyond the fashion category. Earlier this year, she published a book that shares her secrets for navigating life in style, and in 2019 she unveiled the first NORMALIFE products, a skincare collection. Not only does her creation of decorative items seem like a natural progression for the designer, it also makes sense given the state of the world over the past year and a half. “The house has clearly become more important thanks to the quarantine and by rethinking the way of conceiving the space where there is a dining room, a workspace, a sleeping space and a relaxation / media space, whatever the size of your house, ”Kamali told TZR.
The designer, who joins the ranks of other iconic names in fashion like Christian Siriano and Gucci with her expansion in interior design, responds to this idea with soft, comfortable and multifunctional pieces. Take the inaugural pillow, for example. At 28×28 inches, it’s oversized enough to use as a floor pillow for your entertainment spaces or home meditation area, but it also works to add a little more comfort and daring to your bed or sofa. “The restorative pillow […] stack in thirds to become an end table or stool, or if turned on its side like a yoga meditation pillow. It’s also the perfect size for a hug!
Kamali’s cozy corner is where she spends most of her time at home. She tells TZR that she loves watching the sunset over the Hudson River from the window, so she set up a cozy sitting area with a tea table. And the next pieces in her made in Brooklyn home collection can help you create something similar in your space. Expect more minimalist pieces including a comforter, ottoman (cube and ball versions), and rug, all rolled out this summer and fall. She also shares with TZR that a home fragrance and diffuser will follow soon, helping you create even more ambiance.
For now, fans of the Kamali aesthetic can start with the pillow, priced at $ 285 and available in four black and white designs: stripes, dots, marble, and brushstrokes. The narrow palette makes it a piece that can easily fit into different decor styles, and the size and shape make it versatile for entertaining or just luxuriantly lounging. But no matter where you place it or how you use it, it will instantly bring with it the patented mark of the fashion icon of New York City freshness.
