Jessica Nabongo, an Instagram influencer known as the first black woman to visit every country in the world, finds serenity in a colorful and artfully decorated condo she bought and renovated during the pandemic in Detroit.

Nabongo and the 600-square-foot 1 bedroom overlooking the Detroit River are featured in a new video in CNBC’s Unlocked home tour series. The 37-year-old bought the house a year ago after negotiating the asking price of $ 65,000 to $ 44,000. A full bowel job and furniture cost him an additional $ 52,000.

It’s Nabongo’s second place in the building, described as a co-op in the city’s Gold Coast neighborhood with over $ 600 in HOA fees. The other, bought for $ 42,000, serves as his office and fitness studio.

“The pandemic has definitely changed my relationship with the desire to be home,” says the 37-year-old, who visited her 195th country in October 2019. “Because I travel so much, I love to come back here because it allows me to slow down at the bottom and in the middle. “

The urge to travel attributes to his parents, Ugandan immigrants, the development of his love of travel. She has an upcoming book with National Geographic titled “The Catch Me if You Can: One Woman’s Journey to Every Country in the World”.

It’s unclear why she moved to Detroit, but she says she finds her neighborhood quiet and appreciates its proximity to Belle Isle.

“I see this as a place that I will have forever,” she said.
